Which route to choose?

In case you have any doubts, we would like to help you choose which route to follow. Particularly if this is the first time you are going to walk the Camino de Santiago Tours. We would like to give you some tips to help you make your choice. Although ultimately, you should always listen your “inner voice” and let it guide you.
The “French Way” departing from Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port, in France, is by far the most traveled path of all; eight out of ten pilgrims chose this route to walk the Camino. The infrastructures and available services all along this route make the French Way the most comfortable and easy to follow. We would recommend this path to first time pilgrims, or to those who will do the Camino alone. It is quite easy to meet people along the way to exchange experiences, get help in case of need, and also places to get some food or simply spend the night.

The “Primitive Way” departs from Oviedo, northern Spain. It is the first known route to Santiago. This path remains virtually identical to the one used by the pilgrims in the ninth century. That is also the main problem of this route, the difficulty of its trail. It gets really hard during the spring and winter. Since this path runs mostly on dirt roads, due to the rain, it becomes flooded and muddy easily. In addition, the signs are not very good. On the other hand, authenticity is the virtue of this path and the possibility of entering into perfect communion with nature and the environment, and walking the same way pilgrims used to during the Middle Ages.
The “Vía de la Plata” starts in Seville, southern Spain, and it is very interesting because of the important cultural heritage you can see along its trail. Great part of this route runs through an antique Roman road of communication. The bad part of this path is that during summer, it can be dangerous because the temperatures are way too high.
The “Portuguese Way” is the second busiest path after the French Way; it departs from Lisbon in Portugal. It is a highly recommended route because you can meet many people, but it is not as crowded as the French Way. It is also really well marked, and most of the route runs between roads and woods.
The “Camino del Norte” is the path with the highest grown number of pilgrims in recent years, and it is also the most original compared to others. This is because it runs along the northern coast of Spain, so it offers amazingly beautiful maritime landscapes, as well as less crowded trails. It makes it hard, but also a really valuable adventure.
